[SEE] Abashiri Prison Museum in Hokkaido

Abashiri-Prison-Museum-1.jpgA Prison would come in to Japanese people's mind when they have been questioned about Abashiri city. It is because prison at Abashiri was known for a concentration camp long time ago and also the place was used in several famous films such as Abashiri Bangaichi. Old Prison has no longer been used as a prison, but it is open for public now as a open air museum. Its size is 3.5times bigger than Tokyo Dome.

The Prison was built approximately 120 years ago in Meiji era and reconstructed to museum 30years ago.
Within the Museum, there are plenty of things to see such as chamber, bathhouse, radial five winged prison and so on. You will at least stay here 1hour. Even more, as the prison was built ages ago, some of the architecture was built by the prisoners without using any mashine. Therefore they are very unique but also original.

This prison is must to see when you visit Hokkaido.
Brochures are available in English, Chinese and Korean so you do not need to struggle by not understanding Japanese.

<Additional Information>
Visitors are able to have the same menu of which prisoners once ate. Here is your time to try out how the Japanese prison's food was like. The food is very popular among visitors because of its healthiness
